Company News >> Supply to Apple: BOE/Samsung Display/LGD's three major OLED suppliers are competing 20th,Oct,2021
A few days ago, according to upstream and downstream industry chain information, the domestic panel maker BOE has obtained Apple's conditional risk mass production license for the iPhone 13 in September, and will start supplying it in the fourth quarter. RUNTO predicts that BOE's AMOLED mobile phone panel shipments are expected to reach 50 million units in 2021, of which shipments to Apple's iPhone will exceed industry expectations, reaching at least 17 million units.

The three major OLED suppliers of BOE, Samsung Display, and LGD are competing

After BOE obtained the iPhone 12 certification in December last year, BOE has once again obtained the 6.06-inch risk mass production license for the basic iPhone 13 model, and will start supplying it in the fourth quarter of this year.

Judging from the licensing rhythm of the iPhone 12 to 13 series and Apple's strategic demand, BOE is expected to supply LTPS OLED panels from the beginning of the iPhone 14 next year. Currently, only the dual supply of Samsung Display (SDC) and LG Display (LGD) are the new products just launched on the iPhone 13.

Apple’s iPhone 14 plans to launch a total of 4 models of 6.06-inch basic model, 6.7-inch Plus, 6.0-inch Pro and 6.7-inch Pro Max next year. According to iPhone 13 rules, for the latter two models, Apple expects to use low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) TFT. Among the first two models, the 6.06-inch basic model will still follow the LTPS TFT, while the 6.7-inch Plus has not yet determined whether to use LTPS or LTPO.

The first thing BOE can ensure is the 6.06-inch basic model, because the iPhone 12 approved before and the iPhone 13 basic model that was conditionally approved this year are both 6.06 inches in size. If the final 6.7-inch Plus is also the LTPS method, BOE can also look forward to supply.

Ultimately, BOE will become one of Apple's stable ternary suppliers. On the one hand, BOE's product quality has been improved month by month under Apple's demanding requirements. During the iPhone 13 certification process, difficulties were encountered in the properties of luminescent materials and touch screens, which were resolved through adjustments in materials and technology. Even after obtaining the limited certification, BOE still needs to make up for the shortcomings within the time limit reached by the two parties to achieve mass supply within the year. On the other hand, BOE's intervention will help Apple expand its bargaining chips to Samsung and LGD, especially Samsung.

Samsung and LGD will continue to work hard to maintain their advantages in technology and production. In addition to the 6-inch iPhone OLED, they are currently developing technologies that may be applicable to OLED products such as the 10-inch iPad and iMac. Apple is considering determining the quantity and price of OLED iPad panels supplied by Samsung Display next year.

LGD and BOE's LTPO technology will also have an impact on the TFT mode of the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus next year. At present, LGD and BOE are still immature on LTPO TFT. Therefore, the LTPO panel used for the first time in iPhone 13 this year only comes from Samsung. Apple hopes to reduce its dependence on Samsung, but does not want its proportion to increase. If neither LGD nor BOE can supply LTPO OLED stably, from the perspective of Apple's supplier strategy, there is no need to apply LTPO to the three products in the iPhone 14 series.

BOE's supply of iPhone OLED is expected to exceed 17 million pieces this year

In the first half of 2021, global smartphone AMOLED panels shipped 260 million pieces, a year-on-year increase of 30%. Among them, Samsung accounted for 72%, ranking first. BOE surpasses LGD and ranks second in the world.
