According to South Korean media reports, after Samsung successfully OLEDed the mobile phone screen, the next step is to gradually phase out the LCD screen for the flat panel, and the flat product line will eventually be completely modified to produce OLED panels.
Samsung panel maker SDI is preparing to reduce the supply of flat panel LCD panels, and instead the output of OLED panels will increase. Since January of this year, SDI has actively increased the production of OLED panels for flat and notebook PCs, from 2000 to 25 million in the second half of 2016 to 30 million.
Including SDI, LG Display and Sharp are both Apple iPad panel suppliers. In the case of SDI production cuts, Apple may seek other suppliers to help fill capacity gaps. SDI is expected to supply 600,000 flat panel panels to Apple in the first quarter of this year. IHS Market, the market regulator, estimates that SDI will be further reduced to 300,000-400,000 in the second half of the year.
Samsung will launch tablet and notebook products with OLED screens this year. It is rumored that Apple is also considering whether to follow up, the current internal OLED panel quality certification, and evaluate the benefits of the iPad screen change. From this point of view, Samsung's production of LCD flat panels, it seems that there are also attempts to force Apple to upgrade the flat screen.
