According to BusinessKorea, sales of LG's organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TVs have exceeded the milestone of 4 million units in six years since the company began mass production.
Market researcher IHS Markit said on March 24 that LG Electronics sold 1,564,500 OLED TVs in 2018, an increase of about 33% over the previous year.
LG Electronics began mass production of OLED TVs for the first time in 2013. Since then, 3,803,000 units have been sold as of the end of last year. In 2013, LG Electronics sold 3,600 units of its first OLED TV model, but its sales in 2014 increased more than 20 times to 76,400 units, followed by 313,900 units in 2015 and 666,400 units in 2016. Its annual sales exceeded 1 million units. In the first quarter of 2017, Korean TV giant LG Electronics sold 365,000 OLED TVs in the first quarter of this year.
LG Electronics' OLED TV is enjoying good reviews from experts and consumers. They received high scores from a number of well-known rating agencies, including the US consumer magazine "Consumer Report", which ranked LG OLED TV first in its performance test in 2019.
LG Electronics plans to launch aggressive sales activities to further consolidate its position in the high-end TV market this year. The company launched a series of new products with improved performance in early March and decided to reduce TV prices by 30% compared to last year. Through this, LG Electronics plans to increase its total TV sales from 20% in 2018 to 25% in 2019.
