Company News >> 2016-2020 China AMOLED panel capacity expansion forecast 6th,March,2019
Recently, Taiwan market research institute Digitimes Research published a report on "2016-2020 China AMOLED Panel Capacity Expansion Forecast", which conducted in-depth research on the AMOLED industry in mainland China, focusing on the expansion capabilities of manufacturers, and the current major smartphone manufacturers in the market. Plans and technical challenges faced by Chinese manufacturers.

The report pointed out that one of the most popular investments in the display panel industry in 2017 was the AMOLED industry, and China became the zero point of capacity expansion. Seven Chinese panel makers continue to expand existing or build new AMOLED production capacity. It is estimated that the total annual production capacity will increase from 272,000 square meters in 2016 to 1.584 million square meters in 2018, and 4.644 million square meters in 2019. The annual growth rate of the composite of 7.864 million square meters was 131.9% between 2016 and 2020.

In 2020, BOE will become the largest Chinese AMOLED panel maker, accounting for 35% of the country's annual production capacity, Tianma Microelectronics' share is 17.6%, and Visionox will occupy 14%.

However, the sharp growth of Chinese manufacturers is followed by the pursuit of Korean counterparts. For example, Samsung Display (SDC) and LG Display (LGD) have a total AMOLED panel production capacity of 4.945 million square meters in 2016. The total production capacity in 2020 will reach 15.13 million square meters, with a compound annual growth rate from 2016 to 2020. The rate is 32.3%.

It should be noted that the above two manufacturers will focus on capacity expansion on flexible AMOLED panels, and the proportion of flexible panels will increase from 46.1% in 2016 to 72.6% in 2020. China's AMOLED panel makers may find it difficult to obtain orders from Apple and other international smartphone manufacturers for at least the next five years. Because its technology is inferior to Samsung's display, it is likely to be adopted by local smartphone manufacturers with rising global market share.

Chinese AMOLED manufacturers face two major obstacles in their product development: improving resolution and driving plastic substrate technology. Samsung has significant advantages in these two areas.

For these two key technologies, 2017 and Huiguang (Shanghai) are expected to reach the level of Samsung Display in 2014. Digitimes Research pointed out that Hehui Optoelectronics is three years behind, while other Chinese manufacturers are still 1-2 years behind.

The yield of evaporative luminescent materials is a bottleneck in the manufacture of AMOLED panels, and the yield decreases as resolution increases. Among Chinese manufacturers, only Hehui Optoelectronics and Xinli Optoelectronics can produce full HD AMOLED panels, while Kunshan Visionox, BOE Technology and Tianma may be before the end of 2017 and/or in 2018.

In addition, Samsung Display began manufacturing flexible AMOLED panels using PI (polyimide) materials in the second half of 2014. Chinese manufacturers have already announced such panels, but mass production will not begin until 2018.
