Company News >> Smartphone market OLED display momentum is growing 25th,Dec,2018
According to the latest report, the market share of OLED displays in the global smartphone industry has grown rapidly, surpassing 60% between July and September.

As major smartphone companies, including Apple and Huawei, began to competitively adopt this self-illuminating (OLED) display as the flagship model screen, the market share of OLED revenue has been growing (35% in the first quarter of last year).

Sales of the entire smartphone display market in the third quarter were $10.8 billion. According to the latest report released by market research firm IHS Markit, 6.6 billion US dollars, or 61.1%, of the total revenue in this quarter came from OLED displays. Among them, flexible OLED displays contribute the most to market revenue. This (OLED) panel is based on a flexible substrate, such as plastic and flexible glass, which is lightweight, thin and durable, giving smartphone manufacturers more flexibility in design.

Apple's Liu Haiping iPhone X and Samsung's punching screen Galaxy A8 are all implemented with this new technology. However, this technology has some disadvantages such as high production costs and relatively low production. And rigid OLED displays with lower flexibility and cheaper prices are mainly used for mid-range smartphones.

The report also pointed out that the market share of thin film transistor liquid crystal displays, mainly for mid-range and low-end smartphones, dropped from 56.2% in the third quarter of last year to 38.9% in the same period of this year.

Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, accounted for 93.3% of the total market share in the third quarter, while its flexible OLED market share was 94.2%, ranking first in the market.

Market watchers predict that as more and more smartphone manufacturers choose to produce smartphones with various appearances (such as foldable mobile phones) through this flexible display technology, Samsung Display, the main OLED panel supplier for Apple and Samsung Electronics Its market dominance will be further consolidated.

At the same time, Samsung showed that the combined market share of OLED and LCD is 58.4%, far exceeding its competitors - BOE, Tenma, Sharp and LG Display (both market shares are below 10%). According to market observers, Samsung's market share is only 22.8% in terms of shipments, which means that the company's OLED business profitability is very high.
