Company News >> After the profit decline, the focus of LGD operation is shifted from LCD to OLED 2nd,Nov,2018
Korean display manufacturers faced the toughest period in history in 2016. Since the LCD panel began to face oversupply in the second half of 2015, the display market has begun to decline. The main reason is that although the global downturn has led to a decline in IT demand, mainland display operators have continued to expand production, resulting in LCD supply exceeding demand, resulting in a continuous decline in unit prices in the past year.

The operating profit of LG Display (LGD) was 39.5 billion won in the first quarter of 2016 and 44.4 billion won in the second quarter. Compared with the previous year, it hit 600 billion won per season, and even one in 10 of them did not. Although the market is improving in the second half of 2016 as display manufacturers adjust LCD supply. After a profitable decline, LG Display began to transfer the display center from LCD to OLED.

In the face of this situation, the Korean media The Bell reported that Han Xiangfan, the vice president of LG Display, motivated employees in the current global environment with the words “being overwhelmed and infinite”. "The victory is over, it should be infinite" means that the victory of a war will not be repeated, and it must be adapted to infinite changes with a soft body. The implication is that in the face of the rapidly changing display market, LG Display must respond positively to create results.

Therefore, it is necessary to make some achievements in the OLED business selected by LG to be selected as the future growth momentum. Han Xiangfan said that OLEDs can be successful as early as possible to improve profitability, while LCDs continue to create profits and ensure investment income. For LG Display, 2017 and 2018 will be the golden age for the company's next 20 years.

LG Display is scheduled to make a large-scale investment in OLED in 2017 to cultivate market competitiveness. LG Display decided at the regular board meeting in July 2016 that it will invest 1.99 trillion won in the P9 plant in Paju, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea for OLED expansion. The goal is to create small and medium-sized OLED panel production equipment. After the large-size OLED, diversify its own production line.

In addition, in order to strengthen the competitiveness of OLED, LG Display also launched a business unit adaptation. In December 2016, the company converted five divisions, including TV, IT, mobile, advanced display (AD) and OLED, into TV, IT and mobile divisions. The analysis believes that OLED will become the center of these business units and create departmental synergies.

Han Xiangfan also participated in the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and announced that he will adjust the structure in 2017 and focus on OLED panels. It is expected to expand the capacity of large-size OLEDs for TV by 2 times and reveal 6 generations. Small and medium-sized P-OLED production has actively cultivated OLED business.

With the launch of the second half of the large-size OLED production line E4 in 2017, since 2018, LG Display is expected to reach a capacity of 60,000 pieces per month to meet global demand. Small and medium-sized P-OLEDs for smartphones are also expected to start production in the second half of the year. It plans to expand production capacity by more than 2 times a year to meet market demand.
