According to a recent study by market research firm IHS Markit, flexible AMOLED display revenue is expected to reach $3.2 billion in the third quarter of 2017, surpassing $3 billion in rigid AMOLED panels for the first time, thanks to continued strong demand growth.

Since many smartphone brands have plans to apply flexible AMOLED displays to their high-end product lines, flexible AMOLED panel revenue is expected to grow by 150% compared to 2016. On the other hand, the current revenue of rigid AMOLED panels, which are mainly used for mid-range smartphones, is expected to decline by 2% compared to 2016.

Jerry Kang, chief display research analyst at IHS Markit, said: "The smartphone brand believes that the use of flexible AMOLED panels in the latest high-end products will differentiate it from competitors still using rigid AMOLED displays or LCDs."

Kang pointed out: "Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have launched several flagship smartphones with flexible AMOLED displays since 2013, but they are still not mainstream due to limited panel supply. However, since 2016, more Panel makers have focused on increasing the availability of flexible AMOLED displays and attempting to optimize manufacturing processes and design better panel structures, making flexible AMOLED displays an increasingly popular choice for smartphone manufacturers."

IHS Markit's report titled 'AMOLED & Flexible Display Intelligence Service' states that the goal of most smartphone manufacturers is to use flexible AMOLED displays for their own products in 2017, but some of them will be subject to High prices are difficult to achieve.

In response to price issues, Kang's view is: "Currently, the manufacturing cost of flexible AMOLED panels is much higher than that of rigid AMOLED panels, but as manufacturing yields increase, the cost of flexible panels will fall below rigid panels."
