The penetration rate of AMOLED mobile phones is expected to increase year by year. It is expected that the penetration rate will be close to 50% in 2020. AMOLED is expected to become the mainstream technology of smart phones.

Samsung dominates, Apple uses AMOLED panels to detonate market demand

Samsung has been actively selling AMOLED since 2015, digesting its production capacity and expanding its market influence. In 2017, just as the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, Apple is bound to boost sales through a major revision, prompting Samsung to officially enter the iPhone panel supply chain.

WisView research associate Fan Bozhen pointed out that Apple's strategy affects the overall industry, not only other mobile phone brands accelerate the deployment of AMOLED technology, but also the panel factory has begun to enter the AMOLED panel market, with the mainland panel factory being the most active.

In addition to the Huiguang Optoelectronics and Kunshan Visionox, which had been deployed as early as 2013-2014, the mainland panel giants BOE and Tianma, which were originally based on LTPS technology, also accelerated the transfer of AMOLED technology in 2016, and even the original The planned LTPS production capacity will be directly transferred to the AMOLED production line, and will be installed in the first half of 2017, ready to enter the trial production stage.

Equipment capacity and technical level, the potential development bottleneck of panel factory

With abundant funds in the mainland market and government subsidies for the development of new display technologies, it is expected that the next manufacturers will gradually build new AMOLED production lines. However, the high threshold of AMOLED production technology, in addition to the need to have a certain level of backplane production capacity, the evaporation process and packaging process of the organic light-emitting layer is also a bottleneck.

Taking vapor deposition equipment as an example, it still relies on the supply of Japanese and Korean equipment manufacturers. Among them, the 6th generation Half Cut machine of Canon Tokki is the competition of various panel manufacturers. However, Canon Tokki has limited capacity and is still giving priority to meeting the future needs of Samsung and Apple.

In the past two to three years, Samsung Display has almost monopolized the entire AMOLED panel supply. Some mobile phone brand customers are not willing to be completely tied by Samsung, and the panel makers are accelerating the layout of AMOLED technology. In addition to the mainland panel factory, WitsView believes that the most important indicator of this year is that Lejin Display will officially mass produce 6 generations of Flexible AMOLED production line in the second half of the year. The first wave of products will target non-Ping mobile phone customers, and it is expected to gradually make AMOLED mobile phone panel market. A more healthy development trend towards multiple suppliers.
