Company News >> Burning screen problem is difficult to solve, or become an important obstacle for LG to promote OLED 25th,Sep,2018
After LG's Guangzhou OLED project was approved, on September 19th, LGD held the "2018 OLED Partners' Day" at the Doubletree Hotel Guangzhou Huihua, and received support from many domestic TV companies. Cats, Jingdong and other domestic strong channel dealers have shown their confidence and determination to promote OLED TV in China, but I believe that there is still an important technical problem that hinders the popularization of OLED TVs, that is, the problem of burn-in.

Burning screen problem is difficult to solve, or become an important obstacle for LG to promote OLED

Important defects of OLED TV

When LGD promotes OLED TVs, it has repeatedly emphasized that OLED TVs have the advantages of wide color gamut, bright colors, power saving, light weight, etc. This is indeed the advantage of OLED compared with TFT-LCD, but the shortcomings of OLED TV are also very obvious, that is The problem of burn-in is still difficult to solve.

Burning the screen is caused by the gradual decrease of the color uniformity of the screen after the OLED TV is used for a period of time. The OLED screen is composed of countless red, green and blue sub-pixels, and the performance of using some sub-pixels for a long time under high brightness is degraded. , which leads to burn-in problems.

LGD has promoted OLED TV for many years. It has accumulated considerable technical advantages in OLED TV panels. Although it indicates that it has effectively solved the problem of burn-in, the reality is not optimistic. This year’s Incheon Airport and the well-known manufacturer Nanosys booth LG TV burnt screen problems have proved that LG has not been able to solve this problem perfectly. Especially the LG OLED TV of Incheon Airport is a new product in 2018. It was installed at the beginning of this year. In such a short period of time, there is a problem of burn-in. This is clearly contradictory to LG's commitment to 30,000 hours of OLED TVs without burning screens.

Perhaps another strong OLED panel manufacturer Samsung is aware of the defects of OLED TV, so it develops OLED panels mainly for mobile phones and other digital electronic products. After all, these products have smaller screens and a service life of about 2 years. Samsung can Better control of the quality of the OLED screen, it also earned a lot of money in the small and medium size OLED panel industry. LG has developed OLED panels at the same time, but the OLED TV panel has been promoted, and its business is still in a loss.

LG's difficulties in promoting OLED TV

LGD developed OLED panels as early as 2008. After so many years, OLED panels have finally achieved relatively stable quality, and OLED TVs have gradually gained market recognition. In 2017, OLED TVs accounted for more than 50% of the global high-end TV market. It seems that OLED TV is beginning to usher in a great opportunity for development.

It is this important opportunity to seize this opportunity. LG announced that it will invest 30 billion yuan in Guangzhou, China to build an 8.5-generation OLED panel production line, which was finally approved in the third quarter of this year, thereby rapidly expanding the production capacity of OLED TV panels. At the same time, from the LG platform, including Skyworth, Konka, Changhong, Sony, Philips, LG Electronics and other six major TV manufacturers, it can be seen that LG promotes OLED TV is a must.

However, it should also be noted that among the TV companies that are LG platforms, there are no Samsung, TCL and Hisense among the top five TV companies in the world, which shows that not all TV companies are optimistic about the development of OLED TV. Samsung is pushing its QLED TV, and it is also planning to replace the OLED TV's microLED TV. This year's CES2018 has exhibited the first microLED TV called THE WALL; TCL has its own panel production. Factory Huaxing Optoelectronics, Hisense is pushing laser TV, which makes them a little hesitant to promote OLED TV.

When it comes to LGD itself, LGD is pushing the OLED TV panel. However, it now sees that Samsung has made huge profits in the small and medium-sized OLED panel market. It is also actively accessing the small and medium-sized OLED panel market, but only the small and medium-sized LGD market. The size of the OLED panel has led to the graininess of Xiaomi's millet note2, which has led to the use of its OLED panel. As a result, it has not been able to harvest fruit in the small and medium-sized OLED panel market until it is confirmed that it will supply small and medium-sized OLED panels for Apple. Its small and medium-sized OLED panel has limited capacity. It is estimated that this year, it can only supply 2 million small and medium-sized OLED panels for Apple, indicating that it still faces difficulties in technology and production capacity. This also reflects that its OLED panel technology still has a gap with Samsung.

LG's OLED panel production line in Guangzhou is put into production. The production capacity of OLED TV panels is increasing rapidly and the cost is greatly reduced. For TV companies, the problem of burn-in and lifetime of OLEDs will still make them cautious in promoting OLED TVs. OLED TVs must The rapid replacement of TFT-LCD TVs still has a long way to go, and OLED will be eliminated when the microLED panel technology matures in a few years. LG's prospects for OLED TV panels are not optimistic.
