Company News >> OLED high and low: LCD panel continues to evolve and is still mainstream 17th,Sep,2018
Foreign media today wrote that facing the threat of OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology, LCD panel manufacturers are also responding to challenges by improving resolution and reducing energy consumption. The market dominance in the short term will not be threatened.

The following is the full text of the article:

Cost advantage

As brighter, thinner, and more robust OLED panels continue to attack the smartphone and TV markets, liquid crystal (LCD) screens may gradually fade out of the market.

However, LCD panels seem to be reluctant to retreat, and manufacturers are still improving image quality. At the same time, as the main supporters of ultra-thin OLED panels, companies such as Samsung and LG have not been able to effectively reduce the cost of this technology, and it is difficult to achieve mass production. The two Korean companies have shown 55-inch OLED TVs this year, but the price is around 10,000 US dollars, 10 times the same size LCD TV, and has not yet been listed.

The OLED screens used by Samsung Galaxy S and Note smartphones are said to replace LCD screens in a variety of consumer electronics devices, from TVs to computers, notebooks to tablets, to smartphones. Compared with the LCD screen, the OLED is more energy efficient and the image is sharper. The ultra-thin size will also strengthen the ruggedness of future mobile devices, and even fold and curl like a newspaper.

However, OLED panel manufacturers such as Samsung Display and LG Display have not solved the production cost problem, so they cannot compete with LCD panels at the price.

At the same time, LCD panels, which account for 90% of the global TV market, are still evolving and have yet to show signs of faltering market positions. Less than a decade ago, LCDs beat plasma and dominated the flat-panel TV market.

"OLEDs still have a long way to go to become mainstream displays, and their size has to increase, and image quality needs to be improved," said Chung Won-seok, an analyst at investment firm HI Investment & Securities. "At least in the next two." Within three years, OLED will still be limited to the small screen market, to be used as a mainstream TV panel, at least until 2014, but even then, the competition with LCD TVs may be fierce, because LCD technology is also improving. ”

According to market research firm DisplaySearch, OLED displays will take less than one-tenth of the global TV screen market in four years.
