The British investigation company IHS Markit released its estimate report on the 24th, pointing out that the high-priced products such as OLED panels adopted by Apple iPhone have risen and promoted, and in 2017, the smart phone panel market will increase by 33% from 2016 to US$44.8 billion. OLED panels account for 45% of the total, and are expected to surpass LCD panels by 2018.
Judging from the situation of the LCD panel, in 2017, the daily factory of JDI Co., Ltd. accounted for the first place, and the market share of China Tianma Microelectronics jumped to 16.9%, and the city accounted for the ranking from the fourth place in 2016 to the second place.
IHS pointed out that iPhone X uses an OLED panel for a price of $110 per tablet, which is 4-5 percent higher than that of an ordinary OLED panel. Compared with a liquid crystal panel, it has a price spread as high as 2-3 times. At present, the manufacturers of energy-efficient smart phone OLED panels are only Samsung ones. Samsung monopolizes more than 90% of global market share of small-sized OLED panels. This is where other manufacturers can hardly compete.
The OLED panel market continued to improve and the mainland panel makers also actively expanded production. BOE's B7 plant in Chengdu and the B11 plant in Mianyang are all 6-generation flexible OLED panel production lines with a total monthly capacity of 96,000 units. Huaxing Optoelectronics' T4 plant in Wuhan is a 6-generation flexible OLED panel production line with a monthly capacity of 45,000. IHS estimates that in 2018, smart phone panel shipments will increase by 6.9% year-on-year to 2.14 billion units, of which OLED panel shipments are expected to increase by 37.5% to 550 million units. In 2018, OLED panels accounted for 25.8% of total smartphone panel shipments, which is expected to increase to 36% by 2021.
Although mobile phone makers such as Apple and Samsung all have plans to push new OLED screens this year, the demand for OLED panels has grown significantly, but the growth of production capacity has been even greater. In particular, flexible OLED panel prices remain high, iPhoneX because the price is too high, buying gas is not as expected, so Apple will continue to introduce LCD panel phone this year. And the smart phone market has matured and the market is no longer growing. Whether it can eat such a huge OLED panel production capacity in the future has formed a big question mark.
The senior director of IHS, Hayao Hiroshi, stated that “OLED panels want to be truly popular, and their expensive prices need to be reduced to about the same level as LCD panels.”
