Matsushita and Sumitomo Chemical will also collaborate in the organic EL (OLED) panel business, which is considered as the core component of the next generation of flat-panel TVs.
Reported that the cooperation between Panasonic and Sumitomo Chemical to reduce the development costs of EL panels and commercialization as soon as possible.
Organic EL is the electronic material used for the next generation of TV panels after liquid crystal and plasma. It is characterized by thin thickness, clear picture and low power consumption. However, there are technical difficulties in large-scale applications. Currently, the organic EL is mainly used for small displays such as mobile phones. Sony now offers 11-inch organic EL TVs.
The report predicts that Panasonic will join forces with material manufacturers to focus on the commercialization of large-scale products over 40 inches. Organic EL is also facing the issue of longer service life and mass production, Sumitomo Chemical and Panasonic will be committed to research and development work. Matsushita's organic EL production volume is expected to become the only manufacturer in Japan to fully cover the plasma, liquid crystal and organic EL panels.
