For two years, two South Korean giants have dominated the LCD panel industry, but the recent merger in Taiwan has given AU Optronics the ability to compete in the top tier. A new round of competition from previous companies will ensure that LCD manufacturers are looking for new ways to reduce their prices, attracting more users to buy LCD TVs, desktop monitors and large-screen laptops.
In fact, the top three LCD companies are continuing to invest in the construction of new LCD factories. They all expect the price of LCD panels to decline in the first quarter of this year. AU Optronics is the world's third-largest maker of LCD monitors. After its merger with Kwong-Hui at the end of last year, AU Optronics has global market shares close to the top two Samsung and LG-Philips. Although still the third, AUO and Samsung, LG distance is not large, and said it is actively integrating Guanghui.
MaxCheng, the chief financial officer of AU Optronics, said that after two quarters of losses, Guanghui finally recovered its profit. The reason why it was lost to its competitors in the past is that cost has no advantage. Usually large-scale manufacturers can provide more discounts, because the large output reduces costs.
The merger also led AUO's LCD shipments surpassing Samsung for the first time in the fourth quarter, shipping 16.6 million large-size LCD panels and 24.5 million small and medium-sized shipments. Samsung large-size panel shipments over the same period 15.5 million, 24.8 million small and medium size shipments. However, Samsung's figures do not include S-LCD's joint venture with Sony.
