Company News >> Samsung newly formed equipment solutions department restructured LCD business 10th,Nov,2017
According to foreign media reports, Samsung parent Samsung Electronics Group has announced that Samsung Electronics has formed a new unit called "Device Solutions" (Device Solutions), the unit will be responsible for Samsung's semiconductor, LCD panel and other electronic products zero Parts business.
Samsung has tried to integrate its parts business. However, the plan was eventually abandoned to give the parts business more autonomy and make them more like operating as independent companies.
Samsung said in a statement today: "The equipment solutions division is formed to enhance the coordination and synchronization capabilities of Samsung's chips, LSI (Large Scale Integration) systems, LCD panels and Samsung Mobile Display businesses." It will help Samsung Components to further strengthen its cooperation with its global customers. "
Samsung said Kwon Oh-hyun, chief executive of Samsung's semiconductor division, will assume the role of head of equipment solutions and will take over the current role of Chang Wonkie, president of Samsung's LCD division and executive director of the S-LCD division. S-LCD is a Samsung LCD panel joint venture with Sony. Zhang Weng Ke will serve as Samsung equipment solutions department consultant to assist the department of technological innovation and other work.
Samsung this break the routine announced mid-year business restructuring, mainly due to its LCD panel business, a serious loss. On the other hand, although Apple has always been one of Samsung's key purchasers, the fact that Samsung and Apple recently sued each other for infringing on their smartphone and tablet technology patents does not rule out the possibility of a deterioration in the partnership between the two companies.
In most cases, Samsung will choose to announce the company's business restructuring plan every December or early January.
LCD business losses
According to media reports, Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee decided on the reorganization of the underperforming business unit after he learned about the company's market performance in the first half of this year on Thursday. A spokesman for Samsung today said that one of the objectives of the equipment solution division was to bring the LCD panel business back to normal as soon as possible.
During the previous quarter, Samsung lost its No. 1 spot in the global LCD panel market and was forced to relocate to LG Display. Samsung's 3D panel market advantages are also being challenged from the new LG products.
Kim Young-chan, an analyst with South Korea's Shinhan Investment Corp., said: "As the market is not as good as LG Display, outsiders have expected Samsung to take a business restructuring initiative to rejuvenate the LCD business."
Samsung is scheduled to release its second-quarter earnings this week. Most analysts had downgraded their estimates for the quarterly market performance of Samsung as the LCD business suffered a loss.
Thomson Reuters survey of 32 analysts earlier showed that these analysts expect Samsung's operating profit in the second quarter to reach 3.9 trillion won ($ 3.6 billion), up from 2.95 in the first quarter of this year Trillion won, but lower than the same period last year 5 trillion won. Affected by the declining market demand and the introduction of new production lines, the Samsung LCD panel business recorded a loss of 230 billion won in the first quarter of this year and a profit of 490 billion won in the same period of the previous year.
