Company News >> OLED screen brightness did not think so bad or even lose the LCD screen 14th,Jan,2017
Currently in the high-end smart phones, almost all use the OLED (or AMOLED) display, but in the notebook area, it seems that the use of not many. This year in June, Dell released a OLED screen with Alienware 13 games of this, while a few weeks ago, Lenovo has also launched the OLED screen ThinkPad X1 Yoga combo notebook. Both notebooks offer a very brilliant color, the screen is full of vitality, than most of the previous notebook are more vivid, but from the brightness point of view, it seems not as good as the traditional LCD display.
Lenovo official said ThinkPad X1 Yoga OLED screen maximum brightness of 300 nit, which for the notebook is a very good performance. But through the actual test, the actual maximum brightness shrunk by about 20%, most of the time are not up to this standard.
In the test of brightness, we will set the entire screen for the amount of Bath, and then test tools in the screen to move the four corners, the maximum brightness of the entire screen value of 236 nit. And when only a small window is white, the maximum brightness rose to 305 nit, and in the ordinary LED backlight X1 Yoga test, whether white or full-screen window, are always maintained at 296 nit.
Another Alienware 13 OLED screen has a similar performance, the brightness from 289 to 296nit changes between the ordinary LCD screen brightness is always maintained at 400nit.
OLED vs LED & LCD
Why OLED screen in non-full-screen white when the brightness will become high? The reason lies in the OLED panel and the general principle of the LCD panel light.
Ordinary notebook LCD screen used by backlighting, and if the operating system needs to output 100% of the brightness, then the backlight will be raised to the maximum. And because of the backlight settings, different screen brightness does not appear part of the inconsistency. As long as the set to 300nit, no matter which part, are to maintain uniform brightness.
How OLED Works
The OLED panel is also a separate light through each pixel to display their own, we can imagine once dissatisfied with the LED light bulb wall, all of the pixel light source through its own brightness lighting.
In order to reduce power consumption, OLED screen according to the number of light and luminous pixels to reduce their maximum brightness. While the OLED screen pixel white light will have the potential to reduce the brightness, especially around the black, because black and white contrast, do not need so high brightness, it is usually not so high level. In addition, this can also extend the battery life, especially when using dark or black theme, you can achieve very power-saving effect.
Automatic content-based adjustment
Screen specialists usually use a method called APL to test, 100% full-screen brightness, black is 0%, while the other colors are between the two. In each OLED panel, there is the relationship between APL and brightness, but not always a regular change.
The relationship between screen brightness and APL is not limited to laptops, including tablet PCs and OLED TVs. For example, Soneira measurements Samsung Galaxy Note 7 screen at 1%, 50% and 100% three levels, the brightness was 639nit, 495nit and 418nit.
In real life, we can not freely choose the percentage of APL, and it is based on your different operations and change. According to Soneira introduction, white background, black font text document APL about 90%, while the photos and videos are usually 15% -25% zhijian, while the full-screen part of the 1080p resolution, about 65%.
Brightness important?
Speaking of OLED screen notebooks or other devices, the brightness is usually not the most important factor. In theory, the brightness of the OLED screen can meet our daily needs,                                 whether it is browsing the Web, watching video, playing games or document editing. However, low brightness does not mean that OLED screen brightness is always inferior to LCD screen.
As the brightness of each pixel OLED screen can be individually controlled, it can bring greater contrast effect, which will make the content becomes more clear. When we put OLED and non-OLED screen X1 Yoga notebook directly into the outdoor sun when the contrast, OLED because of the dimming, text display (right) even more clearly than the LCD.
In the indoor environment, the difference between the two is even more obvious, not only the color is more vivid, and the viewing angle has become larger.
OLED color and energy in the screen are even better than the LCD panel, while the brightness is better than the more obvious contrast and adjustability, it also does not belong to the LCD. Therefore, if possible, we still recommend to buy as much as possible with the OLED screen device.
