Company News >> OLED screen brightness did not imagine so poor or even lose the LCD screen 21th,June,2017
Currently in the high-end smart phones, almost all use the OLED (or AMOLED) display, but in the field of notebooks, it seems not much use. In June this year, Dell released an LCD screen with Alienware 13 game, while a few weeks ago Lenovo also launched the OLED screen ThinkPad X1 Yoga combo notebook. Both notebooks provide a very brilliant color, the picture is full of vitality, than most of the previous notebook are more vivid, but from the brightness point of view, it seems less than the traditional LCD display.
Lenovo official said ThinkPad X1 Yoga OLED screen maximum brightness of 300 nit, which for the notebook is a very good performance. But through the actual test point of view, the actual maximum brightness shrink about 20%, most of the time are not up to this standard.
When testing the brightness, we set the entire screen to the amount of bass, and then move the test tool at the four corners of the screen, the maximum brightness of the screen is 236 nit.
And when only one small window is white, the maximum brightness rises to 305 nit, and in the normal LED backlighting X1 Yoga test, whether white is full screen or window, are always maintained at 296 nit.
Another Alienware 13 OLED screen also has a similar performance, brightness changes from 289 to 296nit, while the brightness of the ordinary LCD screen is always maintained at 400nit.
OLED vs LED & LCD
Why OLED screen in non-full-screen white when the brightness will become high? The reason is that the OLED panel and the general LCD panel light principle.
The LCD screen used by ordinary notebooks is illuminated by backlighting, and if the operating system needs to output 100% brightness, then the backlight will be raised to the maximum. And because of the backlight settings, different parts of the screen brightness will not be inconsistent problems. As long as set to 300nit, no matter which part, are to maintain uniform brightness.
How the OLED works
The OLED panel is also through each pixel itself to show their own light, we can imagine once dissatisfied with the LED light bulb wall, all the pixels are through their own brightness lighting.
In order to reduce the power consumption, the OLED screen can reduce the maximum brightness according to the number of light and luminous pixels needed. And OLED screen a pixel of white light will likely reduce the brightness, especially when the black is around, because black and white contrast, do not need so high brightness, so usually not reach such a high level. In addition, this can also extend the battery life, especially when using dark or black theme, you can achieve very power-saving effect.
